Interaries - Route 2; Montone / Citta di Castello itinerary

Lunch in the mediaeval fortified hill town of Montone is followed by a visit to Pietralunga and an afternoon spent in Città di Castello. The distance is not great (approximately 80km), so this itinerary, depending on the group's preference, is also suitable for an afternoon outing followed by dinner in Città di Castello.

If you plan to have lunch in Montone and spend the afternoon in Città di Castello, you should leave Bastia Creti at around 11.00. Turn right at Spedalicchio and follow the valley road until you reach the T-junction at Niccone. Turn left, follow the road through Montecastelli and across the Tiber, and 1km after the bridge turn right at the sign for Montone.

After about 5km and a series of hairpin bends, you will see Montone, which stands on a hill with fabulous 360° views. The town centre is closed to traffic, so park either below the wall or in the car park at the top of the town. You should arrive at about 11.30, allowing plenty of time to look round the town before lunch. We recommend a visit to the church of San Francesco, where there is a lovely cloistered courtyard and a museum, and an area ideal for appreciating the panoramic views. The main piazza has a choice of bars, and there are also several restaurants. The Ristorante Erbaluna, and La Locanda del Verziere, which has a terrace with a wonderful view of the Tiber valley, are both recommended.

Pietralunga is a further 18km and you should allow about 35 minutes for this part of the journey. Unlike Montone, Pietralunga is not particularly appealing at first glance, but do not be put off as the mediaeval centre is well worth a closer look.

To spend the afternoon in Città di Castello leave Pietralunga at around 15.45. to arrive at 16.30 - Città di Castello keeps Italian hours so do not expect to find shops open much before then. For art lovers, the Pinacoteca Communale is recommended, and we also suggest a visit to the Duomo. A cup of coffee or glass of wine in the main piazza is a must, and if you decide to have dinner here, there is a huge choice, ranging from inexpensive pizzerias and trattorias to fine gourmet restaurants.

To return to Bastia Creti (a distance of about 25km) follow the signs for Umbertide until you reach Niccone. Turn right there and continue straight up the Niccone valley to Spedalicchio.
